A seminar titled "Academic journals: creation, promotion and assessment" with the participation of Business Perspectives
On May 18, 2018, the University of Customs and Finance (Dnipro, Ukraine) held a seminar "Academic journals: creation, promotion and assessment". The purpose was to popularize the best publishing practices among Ukrainian publishers, editors, librarians, and scholars.
Serhiy Kozmenko, the head of the "JICIndex" project, gave a report entitled "The status of the academic journals publication in Ukraine and the level of their compliance with world publishing standards based on JICIndex". Unfortunately, out of more than 2,500 Ukrainian journals, there are very few that are known to the world scientific community. Web of Science Core Collection, namely, SCIE includes fewer than 20 Ukrainian journals (ESCI includes about 60 journals). Scopus includes at most 70 journals. This unacceptable situation is due not only to the fact that most journals are not published in English or do not use English when generating metadata for articles. This is due to the fact that Ukrainian publishers and editors are not familiar with the basic principles and procedures inherent in the best practice of publishing academic journals. JICIndex makes it possible to assess how a publisher adheres to such rules in his activity, to analyze his journal when it comes to other journals and to turn the focus towards improving it.
Liudmyla Ostapenko, the director of the Publishing Company "Business Perspectives", made a presentation "Promotion of an Academic Journal and a Scientific Article", which emphasized the importance of cooperation between universities, publishers and authors in advancing the scientific research results and disseminating them to the world scientific community. The ability of scientists to use modern digital services to promote their own research results was also demonstrated.
Pavlo Usenko, the head of the project on the integrated support for academic journals on the Internet Open Science in Ukraine (OSU), reported on innovations that may be useful for publishers when promoting an academic journal.
Anna Svyrydenko, the director of the Research Library of the Kharkiv State Zoo Veterinary Academy, told about the registration of the Academy's journals in international abstract databases.
The seminar was held in a friendly atmosphere, with a lot of questions and a lively discussion, attended by representatives of journals from Dnipro, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia and other Ukrainian cities. The current practice in the creation and development of academic journals, the formation of an effective editorial board, the provision of qualitative reviews, funding, etc. were the focus of attention.
