Does debt moderate the impact of family commissioner boards on company performance in Indonesia?
Problems and Perspectives in Management Volume 21, 2023 Issue #4 pp. 629-638
Views: 1024 Downloads: 491 TO CITE АНОТАЦІЯThis study aims to investigate the influence of family commissioner boards (FCBs) on the operational efficiency of companies in Indonesia that use debt as a control tool, which includes bank and non-bank debt. Using the two-step GMM-First Difference estimation method, the research sample consists of 121 family-owned companies using unbalanced panel data from 2009 to 2018. This investigation produces several significant findings. Firstly, the results of the analysis show that the presence of family representatives on the board of commissioners has a negative impact on overall company performance. These observations suggest that FCBs may prioritize the interests of family shareholders over minority shareholders, which indicates entrenchment behavior. Second, the analytical results reveal that debt plays a moderating role in the influence of FCB on company performance. Debt acts as a deterrent to entrenchment behavior, thereby improving firm performance. Third, the results of the analysis did not find significant differences in FCB entrenchment behavior between companies that have bank debt and companies that have non-bank debt. These findings have significant policy implications for regulatory bodies in Indonesia regarding the governance of family-owned companies. It is vital to establish a mechanism for appointing family members to the board of commissioners that protects the interests of all shareholders and promotes a fairer corporate landscape.

Job stress, social support, and work-life conflict emerge as pivotal elements in enhancing job performance. This study endeavors to examine the impact of job stress on job performance, taking into account social support and work-life conflict as moderating factors. Data were gathered through questionnaires distributed to a sample of 275 administrative employees at Syiah Kuala University, Indonesia. Analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via Partial Least Squares (PLS) statistical software. The findings indicate that job stress did not significantly affect job performance (p = 0.382 > α = 0.05), whereas social support emerged as a significant moderator (p = 0.001 < α = 0.05). However, work-life conflict did not demonstrate significance as a moderator in the relationship between job stress and job performance (p = 0.866 > α = 0.05). In conclusion, the study suggests that job stress indeed influences job performance, whereas the moderating effect of work-life conflict on the relationship between job stress and job performance remains unproven. Conversely, social support is confirmed as a significant moderating factor in the influence of job stress on job performance.

The study aims to assess the impact of illegal oil extraction on environmental, social, economic, and public health dimensions in Peurelak, East Aceh, Indonesia. Using proportional random sampling techniques, 245 respondents were selected, representing owners and investors (9), tenant investors (18), workers/laborers (68), melters (6), public figures/community leaders (3), the community (138), and village government officials (3). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with AMOS software. The results revealed a significant negative effect of illegal oil mining on social, environmental, and health performance (p-values = 0.031, 0.029, and 0.010, respectively, at a 95% confidence level). Additionally, informal leadership and government support were found to positively influence illegal oil mining (p-values = .017 and .035, respectively, below the significance threshold of .05). Furthermore, illegal oil mining significantly affects economic performance (p-value = .021). This paper emphasizes the adverse impacts of unauthorized oil extraction on community well-being while highlighting the collusive role of informal leaders and government authorities. Additionally, the study reveals a worrisome positive relationship between illegal oil mining and economic performance in Indonesia.

Views: 1190 Downloads: 623 TO CITE АНОТАЦІЯThis study examines the influence of restaurant attributes on customer engagement with traditional food products (TFP), and how this engagement affects revisit intention and electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM). Conducted from January to September 2024 in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, Indonesia, the study surveyed 160 customers who had dined at traditional Acehnese restaurants. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results reveal that Food Quality (β = 0.323; p < 0.001), Staff Service (β = 0.256; p < 0.001), Health Involvement (β = 0.219; p = 0.013), and Involvement in Luxury (β = 0.282; p < 0.001) significantly enhance TFP Engagement. In contrast, Convenience Orientation does not show a significant effect. Moreover, TFP Engagement strongly predicts Intention to Revisit (β = 0.877; p < 0.001) and positive e-WOM (β = 0.757; p < 0.001), acting as a mediator between restaurant attributes and customer behavioral outcomes.

Views: 1301 Downloads: 521 TO CITE АНОТАЦІЯThis study aims to examine how ethnic culture orientation influences the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Western Indonesia, particularly through the mediating role of resource orchestration capability as a strategic management tool. The analysis involved 232 SME owners and managers operating in food processing, handicrafts, and traditional textiles, i.e., industries known for their strong cultural foundations. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling to ensure they had embedded ethnic culture values in their business practices. Data collection was conducted from June to August 2024 using structured questionnaires distributed via Google Forms and WhatsApp. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with AMOS. Results show that ethnic culture orientation significantly affects both resource orchestration capability (β = 0.336; p = 0.002) and SME’s performance (β = 0.213; p = 0.012), while resource orchestration capability has a strong impact on SME’s performance (β = 0.785; p < 0.001). Mediation analysis reveals that resource orchestration capability fully mediates the relationship between ethnic culture orientation and SME’s performance, as the indirect effect is significant (p < 0.001), and the direct effect becomes insignificant. These findings underscore the importance of developing strategic capabilities that align with cultural values to improve SME’s performance in culturally rich regions.

Abstract
This study examines how Islamic work engagement, Islamic work ethics, and Sharia-based transformational leadership affect the performance of Sharia policing in Aceh, Indonesia – the only province in the country where Islamic law is formally implemented. While prior research often focused on the structural and legal frameworks of Islamic governance, limited empirical studies explore the internal psychological and ethical drivers of law enforcement performance in Islamic contexts. Addressing this gap, the study develops and tests a model of faith-based policing performance grounded in Islamic organizational behavior. A quantitative survey was conducted with 378 active Sharia police officers (Wilayatul Hisbah) across 23 districts in Aceh. Respondents were selected through stratified random sampling to ensure proportional representation by rank, region, and function. Data were collected between August and October 2024 using a validated Likert-scale questionnaire. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test measurement and structural models, including moderation effects. Results show that Islamic work ethics (β = 0.634; p < 0.001) and Islamic work engagement (β = 0.120; p = 0.001) significantly and positively influence Sharia policing performance. Sharia-based transformational leadership also has a positive direct effect (β = 0.261; p < 0.001), but its moderating role is statistically insignificant. These findings emphasize the importance of intrinsic ethical values and personal motivation in shaping law enforcement outcomes. Leadership appears to have a greater direct than moderating impact. The study contributes empirical evidence for enhancing religiously inspired police performance and extends the literature on Islamic governance. -

Abstract
Performance management in public policing institutions remains a critical issue, particularly in developing countries characterized by hierarchical bureaucracies and formalized career systems. While previous studies have examined human capital and organizational factors separately, limited research has integrated these dimensions within a mediated–moderated framework. This study investigates the effects of training and development, self-efficacy, and career adaptability on police performance, with career development as a mediator and perceived organizational support as a moderator.
A census survey was conducted among 325 police officers in Aceh, Indonesia, and the data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (SmartPLS 4). The results show that training and development and self-efficacy significantly enhance both career development and police performance. Career development has a significant positive effect on performance and mediates the relationships between training and development, self-efficacy, and performance. In contrast, career adaptability does not significantly influence career development or performance, nor does it exert a significant indirect effect through career development. Furthermore, perceived organizational support negatively moderates the relationship between career development and performance, indicating that higher levels of support weaken the positive influence of career development on performance.
The findings suggest that police performance is strengthened through investments in human capital and psychological resources supported by structured career systems. However, career adaptability appears to play a limited role in highly formalized policing environments. The study contributes to public management literature by highlighting the context-dependent role of career adaptability and the conditional influence of organizational support on police performance.
