Factors influencing contract farming disputes and dispute resolution intentions: Evidence from an emerging Southeast Asian country

The objective of this study is to explore the factors that contribute to disputes in contract farming and to understand the motivations behind selecting a dispute resolution method. Data for this study were obtained through in-depth interviews and group discussions with 15 lawyers, as well as surveys conducted among 525 respondents, comprising 323 farmers and 202 agribusiness representatives in the Central Coast region of Vietnam. The results of the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) indicate that all research hypotheses are supported. The factors influencing the occurrence of disputes in contract farming agreements, ranked in ascending order of impact, are contract content, social influence, price volatility, risk perception, environmental uncertainty, and legal understanding. Additionally, these factors indirectly affect the intention to resolve disputes through courts, commercial arbitration, and mediation via the mediating role of contract farming disputes. Furthermore, the study reveals that when contract farming disputes arise, the preferred order of dispute resolution methods is courts, followed by commercial arbitration, and finally, mediation. This empirical analysis also provides evidence of significant differences in perceptions between two groups – farmers and agribusiness enterprises – regarding the intention to resolve disputes through courts and the impact of environmental uncertainty on contract farming disputes. The findings enrich empirical research on contract farming dispute resolution in emerging countries with conditions similar to those of Vietnam.

E-banking quality and customer loyalty: The mediating role of customer satisfaction

The purpose of the study is to identify and explain the mechanism through which e-banking quality is related to loyalty by including satisfaction as a mediating variable in South Africa. The study adopts a descriptive research design and a quantitative mediation analysis. The data collected through SurveyMonkey comprised a sample of 310 participants who used online banking. The results of the mediation analysis confirm that e-banking quality has a considerable and positive effect on customer satisfaction, which in turn has a significant and positive effect on loyalty in e-banking. The direct effect of e-banking quality on loyalty is also confirmed. Furthermore, the study’s findings show that the quality of e-banking has a significant and favorable indirect effect on loyalty, as mediated by customer satisfaction. Because the direct effect of e-banking quality on loyalty remained significant after the satisfaction intervention/mediation in the model, the mediation is regarded as partial. The findings of this study offer essential marketing guidance for banking professionals who design and implement e-banking solutions for their customers.

The study investigates the relationship among HR competencies, innovative HR practices, and organizational effectiveness. It also conducts an importance-performance analysis for HR competencies to identify the skill gap. A structured questionnaire comprising 31 questions was used to measure various components of HR competencies, innovative HR practices, and organizational effectiveness. 247 HR managers working in various companies in Tamil Nadu are selected based on a purposive sampling technique. Importance-performance analysis was carried out for items and dimensions of HR competencies. Confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and mediation analysis using regressions are further carried out on the collected data. The skill gap analysis revealed that the abilities to use the latest insights in various HR practices, co-craft strategic agenda, align the company’s activities with customer needs, and connect people through technology must be improved. The regression results indicated that the competencies of the strategic positioner, credible architect, capacity builder, and technology proponent are needed to improve organizational effectiveness. The innovative HR practices partially mediated the relationship between HR competencies and organizational effectiveness. The study meets the literature gap in the area of the contribution of HR managers toward organizational effectiveness through their competencies and the adoption of HR practices.

Assessing payment for ecosystem services to improve lake water quality using the InVEST model

However, the distribution of spatial financial feasibility is challenging when implementing this strategy on watershed scale. This study aimed to develop payment for ecosystem services model to improve quality in lake water catchment. The model estimated incentive values based on the costs of farmers’ losses, water yields, and pollution loads. The potential loss was calculated by determining the income of farmers in lake water catchment spent on land conversion from intensive agriculture to agroforestry. Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) modeling tool was used to calculate water yield and pollution load. The model was tested with case study approach at Lake Rawa Pening in Indonesia, consisting of nine sub-basins and 75 village administrations. The results showed that the reference compensation for farmers was 1,255.97 USD/ha/year. Considering the spatial distribution of water yields, the incentive for each village varied widely from 891.54 USD/ha/year to 1,557.06 USD/ha/year, even within the same sub-basin. Ten villages had an incentive above 1,450.00 USD/ha/year. However, considering the water pollution load, 26 villages had an incentive above 1,450.00 USD/ha/year with a maximum of 2,024.17 USD/ha/year. Therefore, village boundary should be an analysis unit for determining spatial incentive feasibility rather than a sub-basin boundary. Moreover, the level of water pollution load can become an additional variable to justify the amount of incentives received by farmers.
