Previous professional experience
Confederation of British Industry, London (the main trade body representing British Industry at both domestic and international levels)
Responsibilities consisted of servicing the taxation committees within the CBI, and advising member companies about changes to taxation regimes being considered and implemented both in the UK and overseas. I assisted in the lobbying of government functions undertaken by the CBI on behalf of its members. Work at the CBI also involved research in the field of taxation of capital markets' financial instruments, leading to my subsequent employment with Tokai Bank, a leading Japanese securities house.

Tokai Bank is one of the leading international Japanese financial institutions, having representative offices on a global basis.
Responsibilities included the design, calculation and legal drafting of interest rate and currency swaps, and egotiation with non-UK swap counterparties when Tokai required amendments to be made to the International Swap Dealers Association standard agreement. I also acted as the in-house researcher for the sales and trading teams within the Bank, assessing the investment value and marketability of new financial products and bonds as and when they were issued. Through this function I acquired a working understanding of complex instruments such as commodity-indexed debt, Euronotes, and debt-equity swaps. I returned to the University of Wales in 1988 to complete a Masters Degree in Maritime Law.
1989-Present; Lecturer in English Constitutional Law, and Law relating to International Banking (including money laundering), and the Capital Markets, Cardiff Business School of Cardiff University (a top 5 research and teaching institution in the UK)

Part-time advisor to Zaiwalla and Company, a niche shipping law practice based in London (until early 1990's)
Part-time advisor to Shaw and Croft, a leading law firm in the field of shipping litigation, (until late 1990's)
Part-time advisor on matters of contract drafting and compliance with EU procurement to an agency of the UK Government.
Presenter on shipping and international trade issues at conferences in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, on behalf of the Anglo-Baltic Lawyers Association (‘BELLA'), London.
Other relevant experience
I joined an Anglo-Baltic Lawyers Association in 1995, shortly after Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia gained their independence from the Soviet Union. Through this Association I have made many visits to countries in Central Europe during recent years. I have also acted as a consultant to one of the largest savings banks in Lithuania, Lietuvos Taupomasis Bankas, advising it on its restructuring following its acquisition of another Lithuanian State savings bank.
