Business Experience

  • 1987 to Present: Principal in Smith & Associates, a private consulting firm specializing in marketing and strategy, especially in an international context. In my consulting activities I have worked with large companies such as Sony, Eli Lilly, Caterpillar and Monsanto, smaller businesses such as computer software developers and franchise retailers, and non-profit organizations.
  • 1976 to 1985: Principal in agricultural enterprises including 6,000 acres of rowcrop farmland, cotton gins and warehouses, grain elevators, seed processing plant, and a joint venture with European investors in agricultural properties. These businesses required travel throughout Western Europe and the Caribbean Basin.
  • 1976 to 1982: President of Citizens Bank in Tillar, Arkansas.

EXAMPLES OF ACADEMIC SERVICE

  • Chair, Presidential/Key Executive (PKE) MBA Program Committee, the Graziadio School, Pepperdine University, 2002 - 2006, 2008 to Present.
  • Elected Faculty Representative on the Faculty Council of the Graziadio School, 2006 to Present.
  • PKE Program representative on the Learning Assurance Committee for the purpose of AACSB and WASC re-accreditations, 2007 to Present. In this role I developed the process for assessing learning outcomes for students in the program.
  • Coordinator of Executive Programs International Sessions: in this role I am responsible for arranging for company visits on our week-long international sessions and accompanying EMBA and PKE students during these visits. I have coordinated visits to numerous European countries, Latin American countries, China, India and several smaller Asian countries. These sessions are offered two times per academic year.
  • Graziadio School Representative on the University Academic Council, Pepperdine University, 2003.
  • Chair, Full-Time Programs Curriculum Committee, the Graziadio School, 1998 to 2000.

Academic Awards and Honors

  • Nominee for the Kemper Fellowship, University of Missouri - Columbia. Fall 1996. This is the university's most prestigious teaching award.
  • Inaugural recipient of the "Favorite Professor" award of the Marketing Forum (MU student chapter of the American Marketing Association), April 1994.
